Is baseball a big deal in the city?

Is it something almost everyone knows about as in shows like Seinfeld (if that's not too 90s)?

Are the games (both Yankees and Mets) heavily attended?

NYC has always been a baseball town, but I think baseball popularity is declining in the city. It's probably
not as popular as the Seinfeld years.

Yankees attendance has always been great. The Mets attendance not so much because of not winning
recently, plus the ownership not spending money on the team and scandal with Madoff investment. I
haven't attended any Mets games in years.

The Yanks could never crack 3 million. 3 million is used as a watermark. Anyhow, Finally with the Yanks winning in the 90's the attendance took off. They actually finally cracked 4 million. Count me in on as a fan of the old stadium. With them making the playoffs 16/17 years, prices of seats, and just plain winning has hurt their attendance. Funny watching the Mattingly years during the 80's and all you see is empty blue seats. http://www.baseball-almanac.com/teams/yankatte.shtml

Yankees games became nearly impossible to attend due to the prices

Maybe, especially if the offense can't score more than one run a game
