Check it out here, Sandy caused long term damage to the Montague Street tunnel the R uses to go back and forth between Brooklyn and Manhattan.

Just means people who get on the R along 4th Ave will have to transfer somewhere to the B D N Q Manhattan Bridge lines.

And it will closed for this long because, along with replacing all the necessary equipment (signals, tracks, lines, etc), the MTA is taking further precautions to avoid another situation like this from happening in the future by installing safeguards also.

Right?

They probably haven't planned the alternate routes yet. It's still a few months away. I think they'll run the R in 2 sections:
1. 95th Street to Court Street
2. 71st St to Whitehall Street

There are means to turn trains around at Court and Whitehall, so that would probably cause the least disruption.

Those most affected by this would probably not jump on the B D N Q trains. The 2 3 4 5 are going to see the biggest impact, as those trains serve Lower Manhattan.

Another reason why I'll take my car over being beholden to the MTA any day of the week.

One year to repair? In a "socialist" country like China one year is enough to dig a new entire line... I assume there will be situations such as one MTA man working while the other 4 MTA workers watching to make sure everything is done properly, LOL.

The alternate plan is this:

The R will run in 2 sections.

71st Avenue to Whitehall Street.
Bay Ridge to Court Street. Late night service only runs between Bay Ridge and 36 Street. The northern half won't run at all.

Weekends, the R will run its full route via the Manhattan Bridge.

And BEFORE someone makes a stupid comment on why can't they do that regular weekdays, I have two words: Capacity Constraints.

And Before people complain, think about this: When the MTA actually has to gut tunnel walls to fix problems, you know it's needed. Why? In the history of this cities subways, even before unification in 1940, this kind of thing has never been done.

It's faster to transfer to the N at 59th/36th streets anyway. If you work downtown, I imagine it'd be a pain.
