I saw on the news today that NYC is the most expensive place to live in the country. According to the report, for a family of 4, it takes $93K just to get by ---- that doesn't include vacations or any extras.

I believe that San Francisco is just as expensive as NYC.
Not sure as San Francisco's rents are higher. However, NYC might exceed costs in other areas such as heating and cooling bills, cost of car insurance, and taxes may be higher than most places.

Lol yeah right. 100% depends on your lifestyle and this is going to be for Manhattan only. I run my own business and plow everything back into it and pay myself 30k net of taxes. My family of 4 is doing just fine and not missing anything. Mind you, I don't have any desire to drink away my paycheck at the bar and my wife isn't at Saks every other day
I disagree with the assertion that a family of four has to have 93k in order to get by. There are many people, MANY, that make less than that. It does require budgeting, of course. Median household income for the City is less than 60k.
Of course you can get by without making 93k in Manhattan.
But the question is how? Are you living in the housing projects, Mitchell Llama, rent controlled, rent stabilized, LAMP, or some other sort of program housing? That's a big part of Manhattan.
Not to mention all those living in who knows what kind of crazy roommate situation.
If you're going to get a market rate studio in Manhattan, that's up to 3k a month. And landlords want you to earn 40 times one month's rent to move in.

True, but I wasn't referring to Manhattan. Having two kids pretty much prices the regular person out of there. I was disagreeing with the assertion that a family of four couldn't make it on less than 93k in NYC as a whole and as we can both agree, that is not true at all. Families don't have to live in Manhattan..they can suck it up and commute like mostly everyone else. They can live in an 2/2 or 3/1 boro apartment at 2k-2300/mo. Kids will just have to share a room. Transportation can be public (one of NYC's greatest assets). Schools can be public. There can be money left over. I think the problem is that so many people have unrealistic expectations.
