what is closer to Riverdale, Coney Island or Jones Beach? Is Coney free in terms of parking and entry to the beach? Big waves like Jones? how do you get to Coney, by the Belt Pkwy? I was considering going to Sherwood in Westport, Conn(expensive i know) but I'm more in the mood for old fashioned ocean waves.

Neither. Have you tried Rye? (it's been a while for me)

Orchard Beach in the Bronx, would be the closest but I don't know about cleanliness of beach or waves, also don't know about the safety on and off the beach,

i was at Orchard in 1992. I couldn't go in the water because I was working but it was really quite the opposite of the stories I had been hearing, (that the beach and facilities were filthy)--quite the opposite. maybe because it was on a workday when the beach was relatively quiet.

In the past the city used to update about the water condition of NYC beaches. Orchard I find is hit or miss. The facility itself is clean for the most part these days but the water can be anything from really clean to disgusting.

If you're going to drive that far out quite frankly your best bet is Long Island or maybe even New Jersey along the South Shore. I'd just drive out to Jones Beach or even better the Hamptons. Most of the other places aren't exactly civilized in addition to the issues of the water quality.

If you want some Nathan's or if you want to check out Luna Park and the boardwalk then go to Coney Island. We usually put the car in a lot for the day. I don't think it's that expensive--around $10 or so but your car is in a lot right across from the beach basically. We usually park across from the Cyclones Stadium.

If you're only looking for the beach and ocean waves then I would go to Jones Beach or a LI beach. Just keep in mind that if you're not a LI resident you may have to pay admission for some beaches.

Riverdalians are okay with going to the same beaches as other Bronxites?
