Im from Chicago and want to have a fresh start in New York. I would have loved to live in Manhattan but its just too expensive. What about Brooklyn? is it really as expensive as they say? what about the Bronx? Right now here in Chicago I have a 1 bedroom apartment for just 900 in a nice neighborhood. Will I ever find such a good deal anywhere in new York city? I also have a semi large dog.
Whether something is expensive or not is relative. What kind of work do you do? Can you expect to find employment quickly or do you have sufficient funds to hold you above water while you look? A landlord will look for a salary that is 40x the rent and a solid employment background. If you arrive unemployed, that might make it tougher to find a place.
Do you have good credit? A stable work history?
You can get a one bedroom in a decent area of Brooklyn for probably $1100-1200 a month.
The semi-large dog is going to cut your choices down significantly though.
There are areas in Brooklyn that are very cheap where you can probably rent large places - Van Siclen Ave., Norwood, Cypress Hills, Broadway Junction...those places are affordable.
