I looked all over for an apartment and I finally found a GREAT deal in Bed-Stuy. Big 1br for 1000 all utl. inc. I move in the 1st and I'm wondering if there is anything I should know about my immediate area. Stuyvesant Ave and Lexington are my cross streets and I'm probably going to be coming home from the Kosciousko Ave stop around 10-10:30 most nights from mid-town. I'm young, italian from the sticks in upstate ny. I'm pretty used to white trash/trailer park ghetto, but this is different and I'm wondering what I should know about my area to keep myself safe. Any tips?

You already signed to move in ans NOW are trying to find out?

With that said, only time will tell what your tolerance is for certain things. Good luck.

It was a really dicey area 20 years ago. The subway stop where you are getting off had a McDonalds on the w/s of Broadway (I think there is a laundromat there now) which was robbed so many times, corporate pulled the franchise rights from the owners. It sat there abadoned for many years. Can you imagine an abadoned McDonalds?

Anyway the area is going through gentrification, however, I would still be careful walking through there late at night. Is the Mike Tyson mural still on the building on the croner of Lexington and Stuyvesant? There isn't much in the way of shopping or restaurants around there. Its mostly small bodegas and a few Chinese takeouts. Good luck!

Damn you just took it back. I totally forgot about the old Mcdonalds on Kosciusko with the "Key Point" variety store across the street.

Dag even in 2011 with google maps doing everything they can to make areas like Brownsville look like Brooklyn Heights, that area still looks shady as hell...

There are better sections of the neighborhood in terms of amenities, look and feel, and lower crime. I prefer the parts that have more amenities and are further along on the gentrification path. These days, when you find a "great deal" in Bed Stuy, it's not in the most desirable (and most gentrified part). That being said, all of Bed Stuy is a very different place than in was just a few years ago. Crime is down and all types of people are moving in; I'm sure you won't be the only white face. That being said, just be aware of your surroundings as "newcomers" that have problems usually are not.
