It is a shame. With all the money sloshing around the city you'd have thought some billionaire wouldn't stepped forward as an angel. But I guess many felt why throw good money after bad, what with the opera's obvious fiscal mismanagement. My guess is that in the next few years someone will get a new "affordable" opera up and running, either under the City Opera name or another.
NYC Opera is going the way of novelties like FM radio stations and newspapers. They suffer due to financial mismanagement, apathetic millenials, and their parents' ever-shrinking wallets. NYC Opera is behind Anna Nicole Opera in Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). What a sad note for this opera company to fold. On to Chapter 11.... as in bankruptcy filing.
With so much millionaires, multi Millionaires and billionaires in the city, I don't see how the NYC opera can go under like this. Then again how can the NYC opera compete against the metropolitan opera, the NY philharmonic and slightly cheaper but also expensive broadway performances. To bad the wealthy can not save this dying institution of performance for future generations to come! What a shame.

The recent City Opera performances had lots of Millennials. Unlike orchestras and the ballet, opera has a following among younger people. Unfortunately we don’t have millions of dollars to subsidize an opera company.
The fall of the company was about gross mismanagement rather than dwindling audiences. I suspect (or at least hope) that a patron will come along and resurrect the company with new management and a clean slate.

There are many rich people in NYC but there are also many foundations and not for profits that are competing for their patronage.
With few sources of funds outside of patronage and dwindling ticket sales, it's evident that they failed to adapt to changing times and try new, modern genres until it was too late.
