Salamanca is a very small and remote town in Western New York State.

It's tucked into a valley along the Allegany river, adjacent to Allegany State Park. The mountains are beautiful, but as I understand it, it is a pretty depressed place economically.

One economic bright spot is that the The Seneca Nation of Indians, which has a large reservation adjacent to the town, has built a new casino there. They probably need waitresses and security guards. The Senecas are a very successful tribe because they also own casinos in Niagara Falls and now downtown Buffalo (which is under construction).

Speaking of the Senecas, one of the big housing issues in Salamanca is that the entire town was built on disputed land that now legally belongs to the Senecas. As a result, every homeowner owns his house, but not the land it is built on. I think everyone has to pay rent to the Senecas for their land (but I'm not sure about that).

I have some familiarity with the area because it is about 90 minutes from my hometown and I once had family there (an uncle, aunt and cousins). They have all passed away or moved away.
