So why is it so hard to find an apartment in NYC and on Craigslist, most of listings are so fake and many are through brokers, etc. And, lots of building apartments even in Queens are so expensive $1,700 for 1 one bedroom, seriously? What is the best way to find apartment directly through owners?
Sadly yes lots of fakes, as an agent i personally hate it which is why i make every one of my ads very clearly stating all pics are real from my end. I would also avoid trulia. Naked apts is very good.
Sometimes renting from owners is the same as working with a broker just like NO FEE apts are priced more when rented on their own then with an agent.
Good luck with your search and you can shoot me a direct/private message if you have some questions.
There are a number of other sites you can go to to find rentals in NYC.
Streeteasy.com
Renthop.com
Postlets.com (you have to create an account (free) then go to browse listings on the bottom. These are Realtor listings)
Hotpads.com
Zillow.com
NYbits.com
Lastly, unless you're seeking an apartment in a 2-4 family home or renting a condo it will be difficult to meet with the owners directly. Apartments in bigger buildings are usually handled by a real estate agent/leasing agent and there is a professional property management in place.
Even the No-Fee apartments on NYbits.com, you will be dealing with the property management company. The best thing I can suggest is set a realistic budget for the area you want to move to and just keep at it. Understand the closer you are to City the higher the rent even in Queens.
I've never paid a realtard in all the years I've lived here.
CL has a lot of fakes but there's good and legitimate ads there as well. You just have to learn how to sort through the BS.
I would also recommend hitting the pavement and going directly into the buildings you like and call the management/super directly. I have have a few friends that got their apts this way too.

Spoken like a true agent. Yes there are some that are fake and some which are higher but if you can find one it clearly is better to work with an owner and pay them than pay an agent who I have found usually are useless and should be avoided.
yes alot of scammer. i have an apartment in One Bedroom on East Tremont and Waterbury new york, my tenant get packed last month and i want to put it out for rent for a responsible person.
Craigslist has a very high BS ratio, but sometimes you can actually find something there. When I was apartment hunting (we had very strict requirements), I would check all of the rental sites including craigslist twice a day. I found a few apartments which showed up first on criagslist before anything else and was able to see them before anyone else.
In my opinion, no, most CL listing are not fake. However, stop and think what you mean by "fake." I get the feeling that most of them exist. So they're not fake. However, there are a lot of misleading ads, and the most prevalent offenders are brokers listing ads under the "owner" section. The only way this will stop is if people like you keep clicking on the option to flag the ad. Also, if you're enough of a good samaritan, call and start complaining.
However, in the owner ads, I think you can usually tell by the language if it's really an owner. By the way, an apartment won't necessarily be any cheaper directly from an owner - it will often only save you the broker's fee.
