LIRR is 3 + hours. Nice area though. You can check out Camp hero as well out there. It was a former military base.

Three hours? You can get to Boston on the Acela in about the same amount of time or a bit longer.

Anyone who wants a CARLESS beach environment should first think of Fire Island. Short train ride and ferry is much more sensible than the schlepp to Montauk.

I second Fire Island. Easy to get to. Jones Beach is not bad either. You can take the LIRR there.
