Time was soon as weather was warm enough you'd see kids and adults every where playing that unique urban version of baseball. All you needed was a stick, a ball and and not to car trafficked street. In a pinch a park, schoolyard, or even vacant lot would do.
Like to think as with outer "street" games it proved kids didn't need equipment costing hundreds of dollars to have a good time.
When I was a kid in the '90s we'd play stickball in the schoolyards rather than in the streets. Then due to all the schools being overcrowded they started building extension wings on the schoolyard land. No more stickball. Haven't seen kids play since.
Kids in the city barely play baseball, let alone stickball...
Kids used to play outside more frequently, With many sports played. Today's kids are less active, more sheltered esp with the rise of the internet. Going out and coming home with grass stains and scrapes and getting into mischief were the norm. Now any excess energy or child mischief is a "behavioral disorder" and they drug the kids. How dumb.
Hand ball was my thing growing up. Walked by the old handball court the otherday, its good to see kids still doing that these days.
