There's a traffic light near me in a residential area of eastern Queens. It is a low traffic intersection. About 25 years ago it was only controlled by stop signs and then they installed a "smart" traffic light. By that I mean it is red on all sides until a vehicle triggers a detector, and then the light will eventually turn green. OK, I can deal with that although I'm not sure why such a sophisticated system is needed for so few cars. The issue I have is that you can be the only car at the intersection and the light will not change to green for a minute or two (or longer) while the other cross street also has a red. Does anyone have any insight in the purpose of such a system? The intersection also has had a red light camera for about 15 years though I'm not suggesting it's necessarily a trap.
