Why don't you wait until you get here, and then try finding something small and less expensive to start with. No point in wasting a lot of extra money on rent.

General rule is rent at 30% of monthly income (although I think that is too high myself). If we use the average of your wages (4,750 euro) then your max should be $2,000/mo., which will get you a studio (1-2 room) on the Lower East Side, Upper East Side or Harlem. If you don't mind a roommate situation, then you have a lot more options all throughout Manhattan. If your average monthly income is lower than 4,750EUR then decrease the maximum - you will probably be looking at a roommate situation then.

With a current exchange rate of 1.3xxx USD for 1 Euro I would have to agree with amagansettg. $2,000 - $2,500 (pushing it). You'll find a studio with about 350 sq feet starting in Greenwich Village. Every now and then there will be a doorman studio for 2150-2300 in Columbus Circle and the Midtown Areas but they will move within a day or two. You can also get a very basic 1 bedroom somewhere between 400-475 sq feet in Murray Hill and the Upper East/West Side.

I would also suggest you to look into condos and co-ops and paying 3, 6, or an entire year of rent up front if possible because you can get into the West Village, Chelsea, Union Square, Gramercy areas but they'll require more upfront costs, paperwork and time.
