I don't understand why the post & daily news aren't free ... double their circulation and ad revenue.
IIRC, traditionally ads comprised 90% of revenue; the purchase price only 10%. So, your dime was a small part of the dollar of gross revenue per copy. Since ads have declined, due to the internet, the reader has had to chip in an increasing large share. So, your buck-and-a-quarter might be half of revenue now.
I was going to pick up copy of the DN yesterday, with the 16-page World Cup wraparound, but the $1.25 pricetag? Nope

Village Voice went free (at least in Manhattan FAIK) years ago and hasn't seemed to cause them much harm. Then again that paper seems more known for it's sex adverts than anything else today.
the NYDN is purely for tabloids...I read it online all the time if I want a very quick synopsis in a headline without putting too much thought into it. Plus its free online.
For any serious type of journalism with factual, reliable in depth news analysis, I use my NYT online subscription. It's completely worth it. If the NYDN ever started charging for the online version, I would probably never read it.
People still buy newspapers? Someone remind me which decade it is again.
You wouldn't know by riding my Train..... When I used ride the LIRR you would be shocked at how many people still read the paper every day... In the Quiet Car would see no less than 6-7 paper readers every morning. Most were NYT and WSJ readers with one reading the FT. Going home still about 2-3 paper readers in the quiet car.
POST and DAILY NEWS are only for people too stupid to check sports scores online for free.
There really is nothing else in these rags.
They have plenty of interesting articles (yes even the compost), but there's no way you'll be finding me dirtying my fingertips with cheap ink flipping the pages unless I'm at the dentist office waiting for 2 hours and my cell battery died. If I do read their articles, it's always going to be online. I read the Times like crazy but probably have not touched the print version in more than 5 years
