Never heard of a "tuition deposit" on any level. (I've done grad!)

I have heard of a "non-refundable" application fee. That's the only thing I've ever had to pay up front!

Is the "tuition deposit" refundable if one de-commits?

In pre-K, I took naps and ate cookies. Now I need to pay 24k a year for pre-K so my kid doesn't have to go to some ghetto public pre-k.

Eff that... I just put a bid on a house in the suburbs last week, and now I'm in a bidding war. I 've lost bids on 2 prior houses in the past 12 months and I'm wondering whether its because there is an exodus of people to the more desireable suburbs now that Deblasio is ruining the city.

What school is 24k a year??

and isn't this universal pre-k nonsense free?

The tuition deposit is to "hold a spot". It's all BS but many schools do it. And when I enrolled my daughter in private school, the "tuition deposit" was NOT refundable.

Only if it's universal. If it's a business corporation school, Reggio Emilia or Montessori pre-k you can pay top dollar to attend those. However, I tend to see that people with money or a high/good income will have their child go to these schools so they won't go to the neighboring schools that have the diverse children.

Which raises an issue of educational equality, from an income standpoint!

Parents of poor kids may not have the bucks to pay a "tuition deposit" upfront, which means they may end up choosing the school with the negative rep!

The question becomes how to close those loopholes that maintains the unequal status quo!

This seems to be more prevalent than normal! In fact, from little research, it appears to be the standard!

One wonders how problematic this policy may be on a lot of levels!

its not a Deblasio thing. Its a low interest rate & the big wad of cash of foreigners I think. Most of Nassau county r/e held up really well during the 2008/20009 debacle.

I wouldn't say most. When I was looking to buy a few years back, everywhere except the Great Neck area were begging for bids from buyers though most other areas have recovered close to pre 08/09 prices by now. I think Dumbo is looking at Great Neck from his previous posts.

I may actually look into that area myself in a few years depending on the current regime's education policies.

Actually society has flipped in the past couple decades. The drugs, bullies, sex & alcohol are pervasive in the suburbs and the city schools (in decent neighborhoods) are now generally tame & well adjusted. If you can get your kid into a charter school there's no better place than NYC to raise a kid

you are right...not most...but quite a lot of areas in Nassau held up.....I live right by GN and didn't see too much of a drop. Last weekend I thought it was a block party by me.....it was a open house & hoards of people were looking
