Anyone belong to any of the crossfit gyms in lower Manhattan? It's a bit expensive but I may join end up doing it. Does it really work? Are any of the gyms better than the others (i.e. better instructors, equipment, etc)
My opinion is that you should join a regular gym and just get a certified personal trainer for now. Cross-fit is expanding very quickly and I question the integrity of their fitness programs.
Everyone I know who does it LOVES it. It's almost like a cult. One woman I work with has lost over 30 pounds in the past 6 months. It doesn't seem like a lot over the timeframe but it's a good pace to keep it off. She looks amazing. I personally would never do it. Not my thing. My intense workout of choice is kickboxing. I belong to a dedicated kickboxing gym in addition to a regular gym.
There are definitely those who are REALLY into it, but it's no different that those who like to run, or hike, or ride a bike in NYC! There are always the freaks, but just because I see a freak riding his bike down the middle of the road in downtown Manhattan like a fool, doesn't mean I forbid my family from riding bikes.
I hear the guy who hurt his back and I have a friend who was seriously hurt in a biking accident. I also know someone who fell in the shower and broke his hip. So do we forbid bike riding or showers?
No I'm not saying to outlaw everything. It's just that everyone I know that has been like "oh I'm going to try crossfit for a couple of days" turns out being a crossfit fanatic and only talks about crossfit. At least fight club you're not supposed to talk about it so everyone else doesn't have to deal with your obsession! haha
I'm confident you could get same results or better with a good safe strength training regimen or a kickboxing/boxing regimen. These methods are time tested and proven.
I know a girl who is doing in and it is literally all she ever posts about on FB for the past year or so. I feel it's very cult like, as well. She does look like she's in great shape though.
I've always seen crossfit as sort of like a cult. It's also something that you have to dedicate a lot of time to. Everyone I've seen do crossfit pretty much turned it into their life.
^This.
They opened one up in my neighborhood. Too intense for me. And loud.
