Hello I am a recent college grad considering moving to nyc I would like some advice and opinions on if it is ideal.First I have visited and stayed in nyc multiple times so I am familiar with many aspects of a nyc lifestyle. So here is my situation

My salary should be 40-47k so after taxes I should be taking home around 28- 33k a month below are my mandatory bills a month (2300-2750)
Cell Phone 100 Food 200 Credit Card 90 Gas 160 car 350 = 900

Rent (900-1100) - Now I want to live in a safe area, dont want a roommate, wouldnt mind living in a studio, looking for areas in the city or areas close like Astoria

Now what I need help on is the following

1) I want to keep my car which I know is costly I plan on keeping my pa plates for a year so my insurance and car note of 350 will stay the same should I invest in a parking garage or spot how much will that run me.

2) I also need help finding housing areas within my price range

3) How much will these expenses run me in nyc?
Electric
Gas
Water
Cable
Internet
Trash

3)That leaves me with 500-900 left a month before the expenses above can I survive?

40k won't get you much in Astoria and I'm being realistic. Most likely you will need or find roommates If you want to to live and and make it NYC.

you can't keep the car. that's number 1. this isn't backwoods alley in indiana. way too many ppl., no parking spots, and too much risk of theft. i can go on.

you ought to find a roommate on craigslist or another site/company. that will save you dough. don't stay in a borough because it's a fake experience of nyc. get on manhattan island by doing roommate or one of those student housing units with shared toilet.

parking spot in Astoria should run you around $250 a month. Possibly you might be able to find a driveway space for less. Check the craigslist section for parking and storage.

Ditch the car and you have a housing budget of $1500 to $1600, which is plenty to rent a studio, maybe a small one bedroom in many different (and safe and decent)Queens neighborhoods, some in Brooklyn or the Bronx, and maybe Inwood or Hudson Heights in upper Manhattan.

Rent a car for weekend escapes and errands that require one. Car is a problem what with tickets, tolls, and finding parking. If you have to have one for work and you're on a tight budget, maybe you shouldn't be looking in NYC.

Edit: how recent a college grad? Old enough to rent a car?

okay thank you for your wisdom I have decided not to get the car I currently have a car that is paid off but was going to upgrade to a new one but that wont be happening now. Here is what my finances are looking like

Income 2300-2750
Cell Phone 100 Food 200 Credit Card 90 Gas 150 = 540
Rent (900-1100) -Ive seen some studios in Astoria at this price range
optional * 150 = parking found parking spots in astoria in that price range
(Car) = 0 insurance is paid for by my parents, car is a old 99 a4 no car payments

How much will these expenses run me in nyc?
Electric
Gas
Water
Cable
Internet
Trash

Now one of you suggested just living in manhattan how would my expense change if I was looking for a studio or a shared appt in a decent part of the city

Cell Phone 100 Food 200 Credit Card 90 Metrocard 100 = 490
Rent = ?
Electric =?
Gas
=?
Water
=?
Cable
=?
Internet =?
Trash
=?

So doesnt this really equate to the same price
Astoria = Studio to myself + car (maybe 500- 900 of spending / saving money)
Manhattan = nicer ny experience, closer to work, no stress of car, have to have atleast 1 roommate (maybe 500- 900 of spending / saving money)

Hipsters are rapidly gentrifying recently undesirable, but cheap neighborhoods of Brooklyn. You may want to look into Bushwick or Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Astoria is great but 900 for a studio is way unrealistic. Probably more like 1200 to 1400.
