Hello,

I live in a suburb of the city and most of the supermarkets here are neat, modern and spacious. However, when I go into the majority of the supermarkets in the city, they just look and feel so trashy and outdated. The supermarkets that come to mind are Associated Foods, Compare Foods, C-Town and a couple of others; i'm not trying to bash them since i'm sure they have their advantages, but the atmosphere is definitely not the best.

What is the reasoning behind this? For the knitpickers, i'm saying *most* not all NYC supermarkets that I have been to are like this.

I'm not sure, but it could have to do with the very slim profit margins for NYC grocery stores. I guess the rent is just too high. They stay open but don't put any money into renovating, cleaning, etc.

The Lost Supermarket: A Breed in Need of Replenishment

I won't buy anything that's not packaged in my local C-Town. Just too gross.

The closest thing to a suburban experience that is neat and clean is probably whole foods. The other other day I passed by Food town in Williamsburg. It looked pretty neat inside

I love how that article infers that the lack of supermarkets are causimg obesity inpoor neighborhoods....as if when supermarkets were there everyone had given up their fritos and grape soda and were eating veggies...oh please!.

Supermarkets in the burbs may be larger and neater but they are closing too. Way too much competition and too slim margins will ultimately kill the supermarket as we have come to know it.

I think many supermarkets in the city are in smaller/cramped spaces and that makes them look less neat and more outdated.

My local Foodtown is actually quite nice looking and very clean (Norwood section). I personally prefer Trader Joe's for my food shopping but the local FT is much nicer than the other supermarkets in my area. There is a Keyfood a few blocks away that is disgusting.

I hear the Fairway in the Bronx is solid but its out of the way for me. ..and will Trader Joe's please open one up in the Bronx (I will forever complain about the lack of one here).
