Hello friends, just wanted to touch base with you on a subject that is heating up on the Pittsburgh boards. In the city of Pittsburgh, those who have to park on the city streets will place a chair or some other ridiculous object to save their spot when they leave. Those who support this feel if they spent hours shovelling snow off of the spot that they have rights to it. I think it's ridiculous, there are certain facts you have to face when parking on the street.
So does this happen in NYC? If so, do residents respect this?
People have been KILLED for parking spots here. No, no saving. It doesn't happen. I'm sure if someone put a chair or trash bin in the spot, someone would just move it.
In the outer boros, people have been known to put construction cones in "their" spot or have even painted the curb bright yellow for 5 ft on either side of their driveways so people won't "block" their driveway (they don't want people parking anywhere NEAR their driveway!).
Most of the time, it doesn't work. People will just get out and toss the construction cones or park in the "yellow zone" (that's not really a yellow zone)
I just posted this on the Pittsburgh board as well, but I lived in NYC (Brooklyn and Queens) for a number of years and I never saw this problem. The one time I did see it attempted in Brooklyn, the cops foiled it within a matter of minutes.
In my hometown of Boston they do this all the time in the residential neighborhoods. They put out beach chairs or trash cans with threatening signs on them saying "parking for the O'Leary family only" or "parking for the O'Kennedy family only".The worst, predictably is in Southie and Dorchester. http://www.boston.com/news/local/mas...ans_and_fists/
They even try to save the spaces before the storm hits....just in case. http://www.boston.com/news/local/bre...paces_e_1.html
At least one resident is indignant at the ones who try to claim a spot that they didn't even dig out !
According to one of the links you posted, Boston law entitles one to save a space for 48 hours after having dug out the car from that space after a snowstorm. I used to see "spot saving" a lot more in Boston than I see it here in NY, but I have seen it here in Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill on a couple of occasions.
I've seen people put traffic cones in the street to try and save themselves a parking spot. But when someone else comes along and it's evident that there isn't any actual work being done, those cones get tossed aside.
Over the summer, I have seen someone park their motorcycle horizontally. People was sooo mad they moved the bike onto the sidewalk. I think people in NYC are more bold to fight for a spot, therefore people would not dare to try that here. Although we do have those determined who literally have cones in their trunks to save spots. Its worst when it snows. People will sit in their cars ..... watch you dig out a spot..... not offer you help .... soon as you pull out..... they pull right in.....
