I am a writer looking for some information I need for a story I am writing. It will involve a character that threatens to jump off a tall building in NYC. I have never been to NYC. The Empire State Building and the top of the Rockefeller Center are two buildings I am considering. However, from what I know about these places, there are glass/wire barriers that would make it impossible. Would it be possible to circumvent the barriers in a plausible way so that such an event might be possible? I was also wondering how it might be possible to get to the observation deck without alerting security. Note that the scenario need only be plausible. Thanks in advance.
Even if I knew how to evade both the security and the barriers at these two buildings -- which I don't -- I would not tell you, and certainly not on a public forum like this. There's always the chance that some crazy, depressed person might read it and decide to end it all that way. I wouldn't want to contribute to that.
I'm not so paranoid as City Love, but since I've never heard of anyone jumping off Rockefeller Center, I'm guessing it's not possible. The ESB observation deck, though, is, I believe the part that's open to the public.
I'll throw in some free advice I gave to a friend of mine who was writing a story based in NYC, also with no familiarity, and it was riddled with ridiculousness: Don't try it. You'll inevitably get all the details wrong.
Or the G.W. Bridge. I remember a while back passing an abandoned car and a bunch of emergency guys looking over the railing.
Private residences have balconies and terraces that a suicide can jump off of much more easily than public places (not that I've been to every public high point). Have your character go to a party.
It does not work, simply bc of the law of physics. The wind gusts on the top floors of those two buildings push anything below four hundred pounds back to where it originated. Bc of the barometric pressures at those heights, coupled with the velocity of the wind colliding from the Hudson and east river wind currents, it's physically impossible. Just try if you don't believe.
Does your character know parkour? If the answer is yes, then they would be able to get up and over the barriers on the top of the rock. I haven't been to the top of ESB yet so I can't say anything there.
You're looking at about 9-10 ft of glass. The character could do a wall run in a corner to be able get up and over the glass barrier. Also, depending on where your jumper jumps, they will be able to kill themselves regardless of the cross winds because not all the sides have a shelf like structure and are just straight drops.
