Brief update: I got in touch with the police and they stopped by and said that there wasn't enough information to file a report of any kind, except for vandalism, which the landlord would have to report. For the time being, all I can do is continue to keep my head down and be cautious, and over the holidays I'm going to spend some time considering whether or not I want to find a room elsewhere and sublet my room until my lease ends. I appreciate all the input that everyone has been sharing

And they had no other insight or advice at all ? Nothing about whether this has ever happened before or whether they think it means anything ?
Nope, they were profoundly unhelpful. Word for word they said "it could be anything", which was frustrating to say the least. All they said was that if something else happens, then give them a call and maybe they can do more

In spite of what they said, they are now aware and that is good.
the police ... stopped by and said that there wasn't enough information to file a report of any kind, except for vandalism, which the landlord would have to report.
Can't blame the police for being passive on this... DeBlasio/Sharpton neutered them and their hands are tied.
I'm pretty sure during the Guilani/Bloomberg era the police would have taken this type of thing more seriously, as their policy was to be proactive against crime rather than reactive.
I'm personally moving to the suburbs of long island, and although no one will miss my yuppie ass, I'm not exposing my wife and kids to crime, no matter how "safe" my neighborhood is (dumbo, which is near many large projects).
Don't worry - if anything does happen call the cops on the perp.
However, if the perp says he doesn't want to be arrested over it, the cops now officially have to say "oh ok" and back down. In that case, move.
