New Yorkers are FAR MORE American than much of the rest of this neo Nazi country that seemed to show its ugly face in 1980 and metastasize ever since like a spreading cancer.
The Bronx used to have these signs in some places that said "All American City" or something like that (a civic award) I wonder if de Blasio had them removed because it's not PC to his standards
The "All American City" signs are still there. But honestly, it really depends. A lot of people who are African American or otherwise old stock consider themselves American but the rest of us are not encouraged to do so due to immigrant animus (described below)
A huge reason for this is immigrant and other NYC people animus against what they view to be a culture that isn't socially conservative enough. Every so often I meet Africans, Europeans, and more immigrants who tell me they are disgusted by people being "Americanized" and when I ask further, descriptions of facial tattoos, gold tooth, Jerry Springer-like behavior crop up.

Culturally, I've always felt different than middle America and that's what most people think when they think "American" NYC culture tends to be a culture of it's own compared to other cities and the rest of the U.S.

Outside of many people's ethnic heritages I don't see us as really having that many differences from middle America. I wonder what you mean by that. Do you mean people saying "deadass" or "brick"?
