It's my girl's 30th birthday coming up in a few days. I would like to do something special for her. I'm broke as though. Anyway, I'm in NYC and I'm open to suggestions. Let me know. Thanks.

Offer her your hand in marriage, being as it's now biological clock time.

If you know someone you can count on, exchange for free: they cook up a really nice picnic homecooked lunch or dinner, and wrap it in a basket with a pretty tablecloth, candlesticks, candles, 2 wineglasses and wine, corkscrew.. White wine (doesn't stain). Make it a nice presentation to unwrap, in a basket. Cloth napkins add a nice feeling, and won't blow away.

In return, beforehand for that cook, you do, say, 2 solid hours of free home repair or carrying, whatever that person needs help with around the house. Be sure you both think the deal is a fair exchange of goods-and-services.

On the birthday, take the picnic basket and girl to a large park, have the pretty picnic. Snap some pictures of her, even print them out later if you can.

Return the basket, candlesticks etc. soon after the day. If she asks you, "did you prepare all this yourself?" say, "No, I had it all arranged special, for you."

You get boyfriend points for being thoughtful and romantic. Price: $0. Buy her the subway ticket to the park.

The only thing about an outdoor birthday is, ask her ahead: if it happens to rain on her birthday, will she agree to do it a day or so later, instead? I it has to be The Day, then picnic indoors.

You rather ask complete strangers on a messageboard instead of your friends, her friends, family, work friends, etc

Let me get this straight: Apart from the fact that the question doesn't have much to do with NYC, you tell us absolutely nothing about your girlfriend, other than her age, yet expect us to come up with good suggestions? Or have you paid no attention to her interests and tastes? Do you imagine that all 30-year-old women want the same thing, so that any stranger can answer? I'll bet your girlfriend would even be irritated to know that you did nothing until a few days beforehand.

Look up TimeOut NYC
"What's free to do in NYC"
Plug in her birthday date. Maybe you'll find an event or activity she might like.

Also check there on their permanent listings for "Best Things to Do For Free in NYC"

You could always give her a participation present.
