Agreed as well. But if you're feeling lazy or the weather is bad, there is a subway shuttle (the "S" train) that goes back and forth between Grand Central and the Times Square subway station at 42nd/Bway.
If you have to ask how far from Gr. Central to Times Sq., don't take the Shuttle. It's a maze of passageways in the subway, you're likely to get confused (at best) or lost (at worst) and lose more time than you would otherwise save. Go out to 42nd St., walk so the numbers on the buildings get smaller, and continue past 5th Ave. (where the building numbers will get bigger) past the Library and park, until you get to the 7th Ave./Broadway intersection. It shouldn't take more than 10-12 minutes at a brisk, New York pace.
But then, you'll probably do a bit of gawking. Even native New Yawkers are gawkers from time to time.
Was that black/white glass skyscraper at 42nd and 6th always a telephone service building? Now it's Verizon I believe and whenever the telephone provider name in the NY area changed (NY Telephone, NYNEX, Bell Atlantic, Verizon) the name of the bldg changed as well to match.
I seem to remember back in 1980 riding the 6th Avenue line and the train motorman calling the station 42 street and 6th as "Times Square". Does anyone recall the motorman referring to this station as Times Square?(back then the corner of 42nd and 6th was a rather sleazy place) Now it's referred to as Bryant Park.
