This area was rough in the 80's. I remember seeing several situations when I was younger that you would see 1 hispanic and/or Africian American run by you and 30 seconds later 30-40 Italian kids with bats running behind. Thank God times have changed. I also remember the park, Aquinas High School, and the Catholic Church " Mount Carmel " and a little Italian Christian Church near by. I remember lots of the teen guys looking and sounding like the guys from the supranos - WANTA BE MAFIOSO. As I grew older and finally moved out of that area, I remember that the neighborhood was changing.

Is that area now intergrated now?
Some people on this forum recall those days with a sense of nostalgia and fondness, like if it was a good thing people were being run after with bats.
What do you mean by integrated?
The area is now mostly Hispanic and Black. There are some Albanians. Italians are all but gone, although there a few business owners around still in Arthur Avenue.
I want to know if there is a mix of nationalities verses predominantly Italians.
I was told that now everything in the Bronx is considered "the South BRONXs" in a derogatory sense.
There's some Italians in the Belmont section. But E. Tremont is all black/hispanic and it's right around the corner basically. Fordham rd is black/hispanic aswell.
If you mean that all the Bronx is a ghetto, and has a black/hispanic population then you're wrong. There are white areas and nice areas still.
Are you saying that only the white areas are nice?
Where I live FLORIDA - it is intergrated - predominently White and Hispanics and you can eat off the floor. But then again, I live in a gulf course community with pricey homes.
Do you notice a difference in neighborhoods based on ethnic groups?

That's basically it in NYC.

Yeah, there is a difference. In general, areas with large black/hispanic populations are higher in crime and have more poverty.
SuperMario - Well that's ashame. I guess things haven't changed. What about Pelham Parkway Columbus High School Area, is that the "South Bronx" too?
No because it's on the other side (east) of the Bronx river. The eastern half of the Bronx isn't considered south Bronx. Although some call Soundview south Bronx.
The unoffical "south Bronx" is west of the Bronx river, south of Fordham rd. But it's a loose interpratation. It's really a matter of opinion.
