At what time might you suggest one arrive in the morning to get tickets? They begin to distribute at noon, but they rather ominously point out that the park doesn't open until 6 am. Haven't done it for 30 years. Any experiences?

There are a couple lines.
The general line is 5AM ish as WithDisp says.

There's a senior line that you can do at about 9AM.

And a disabled line with seating that you can often get away with at 11AM.

Best is to have a good friend pick up 2 tickets, one for YOU, and show up at 8PM.
<The last is how I do it. I won't wait in line for The Second Coming...sorry Christ.>

But lately I am SO SICK of Shakespearian comedies, that I go only under protest. But I'll probably get dragged to Cymbeline. Skipped Waterston's Tempest...he's too quirky and one-dimensional lately, a little Parkinson's maybe?

But I must say, that on a beautiful Summer night the Delacorte can be magic.
