You could also consider Rego Park which is next to Forest Hills although that could add another 10 minutes to your commute due to the local subway train (the R which also goes to Lower Manhattan).
Thanks for the advice, everyone! Any recommendations on the most efficient way to check out UWS and Forest Hills rentals and neighborhoods? I may be going to NYC for 2-3 days. Do I just need to contact the landlords and agents for the specific rentals I'm interested in or must one get an agent to represent (in which case would I just find one agent that would take me to wherever I want to go or are agents typically tied to an area?)?
Thanks, Coney. Am I required to use an agent? And would a Forest Hills agent, for example, be able to represent me for any Forest Hills rental or only those they are associated with?
Just got off the phone with an agent in FHG representing a rental home I'm interested in. She said that she would collect commission from me (equivalent to one month rent) if I rent that home. Is this pretty standard? Is the owner she is representing also paying her?

Standard practice in NYC is that the renter pays the broker commission, not the owner.
