I am moving to NYC and seeking some help with the situation from people who went through this before. So, I have been spending some time on craigslist and zillow looking for apartments and also sending out emails to schedule an appointment. I am planning to be in Brooklyn for one week next week to look for apartment. So, far the responses have been very low. Also, there were couple of times I received responses asking me to click on a link for credit report, so I am assuming scam. I talked with someone from zillow who pose as a realtor and sounded solid. He talks about the fees i.e. application fee ($200 - $500), realtor fee of one month rent etc.

I know this is probably too much blah blah blah for someone living in NYC for awhile. But the situation might be familiar to someone who just moved in. Would anyone care about sharing their experiences, fees they paid, recommendation for realtors etc? I am hunting apartment in Brooklyn (mainly the Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst area).

I've paid anywhere from $25-$100 for an application fee and anywhere from no brokers fee to 15% (little less than 2 months). For Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst I would walk around and call the number on the For Rent signs posted on buildings. Also look for no fee apartments if you must do it online (meaning you don't pay for the broker).

The only time I've paid the fee was when the apartment seemed literally protected by the broker and it was a good deal.
