What's your reasoning? All the great cities of the world Paris, Hong Kong, etc. have small apartments. The smaller the apartments the more room for everyone. NYC can't just be a city of old single mod cut living in 1100 square foot rent stabilized apartments telling everyone how great NYC used to be.

My reasoning is to expect, perhaps irrationally, that everyone have decent living conditions. If governments can mandate anti-vermin regulations, the can regulate human scale housing...IF THEY CHOSE.

Because other cities cope with inhumane conditions is not a reason all must.
Kids in Sao Paolo, with 18 million people one of the largest, most crowded city in the world eat garbage in the city's landfills. That should not make landfill shopping a tolerable condition.

Small wonder that this kind of human warehousing was promulgated by Bloomberg, a capitalist tool if ever there was one.

um, cl has many options for what you like. i saw a tiny room with a bed (about 50 sq. foot room) with a kitchen for rent at 1250 at chelsea. the showers and toilets are outside of the room and shared. no electric bill. it is perfect for one person. pics are attached of exact room. see below.

I live in a shoebox in west harlem/Hamilton Heights for $1100(stabilized) - if you rented it today it would be $1400 so not sure if you're going to find anything like that downtown. I have a bathroom in my apt but if you are looking for one of those shares you might be able to find something cheaper.

I agree, not only did Bloomber have a third illegal term, now he is making living standards illegal, well, just for this one.

this micro crap is nothing more than a real estate gimmick to mean studio, and small studio.

this has sent back living standards decades, and are worse than the tenements of the lower east side at the turn of the century.

Agree with all points.

It's actually quite sad.

I could get behind the trend if the micro units were at least affordable, but they're actually quite expensive.

We need to go back to the old rooming houses of yore! You get a room with a shared bathroom, with a landlady who cooks for you each evening.

That would be the SRO thing ... you have the self-styled conservatives ranting about those on another thread.
About someone who actually took good advantage of the laws - cannot just throw out SRO tenants even by invoking the much-touted "invisible hand."

And invoking they are, while foaming at the mouth.

Leasing Begins for New York’s First Micro-Apartments

"Renters will pay a premium for a furnished unit. For example, a furnished 355-square-foot apartment on the second floor is listed at $2,910, while an unfurnished 360-square foot unit on the same floor is listed for $2,750 — a $160-a-month discount. The lowest-priced unit listed, at $2,540, is a furnished 265-square foot studio on the third floor. The remaining market-rate units, including a 323-square-foot studio on the eighth floor, with a 268-square-foot terrace, will become available over the next few weeks, and priced based on how quickly the first apartments rent, according to a spokeswoman for the developer."
