Am here to tell you best confine your nosey questions to this board and let it go at that. Peeps do not like persons getting all up in their business regardless of if the thing is there legally or otherwise.

If I see something questionable I address it wherever I see fit, thank you. Keep your head in the sand if you wish.
HA HA people getting all defensive about a simple question about possible misuse of taxpayer money because its the NYC fire dept. Lord knows those guys can do no wrong. OP you can complain about possible tax money waste on other areas of the city but the long protected FDNY is NO NO, I bet you can guess why!
I don't know about a number on it but I think it says "Communications". I'll double check next time I see it. I checked google images for "FDNY pickup trucks" and there are some pickup trucks though not the exact one I see.
This vehicle as well as a van marked"buildings unit" for example is likely a civilian fdny employee who is either on call 24/7 or begins and ends his shift at an actual work location. Instead of driving to a central office in western Queens and then driving back to Rosedale for the first assignment, he will drive from home directly to Rosedale. Same principal at the end of the day.
High ranking Officers on FD and PD have take home vehicles, most of them are unmarked vehicles.
FDNY Communications workers are all civilian positions as far as I know and they have always taken home their department vehicles because they are on call to repair issues with FDNY commo equipment, 24/7. The city recognizes the need to be able to quickly repair this equipment should the need arise, and rightfully so.
The City/taxpayers should not be buying vehicles for the personal use of its employees whether they are police, firemen, teachers, or politicians.
Let them use their salaries to buy, maintain, and insure their own vehicles, like the rest of us must.
