Who said anything about using the vehicles to go shopping or camping?
They have very strict policies for the employees to operate these vehciles. Milage and ez pass are tracked. No civilians are allowed into any city vehicles unless its in the back of a cop car or ambulance.
What you should do, is say thank you once in a while to our first responders.

Bingo... All my Dept employees who are afforded the privilege of a take home vehicle also buy and insure their personal vehicles. The city cars are because they are on call 24/7, so if the phone rings at 3am and they need to be somewhere, they just go to the field location, without the need to commute an hour to their work location just to pick up the truck.... As stated miles are tracked as well as fuel and Ez pass use.
... I'm just curious about it as it's not something you see as a normal practice, that is an emergency vehicle parked at a guy's home for years. I thought maybe someone here knew what FDNY policy was and why it's better to have an emergency vehicle at someone's home instead of at a firehouse. Maybe the guy taking it home is the only one who uses that particular vehicle.
There are numerous auction vehicles out there that were decommissioned but not completely repainted. What does the license plate say?
Just worry about yourself and your station wagons. Who care what fdny truck is parked or cop car etc... **** thanks
