Would anybody have suggestions for good places to go for kitchen renovation in Manhattan, preferably near Kips Bay/Gramercy? There are many places listed but the only place I recognize is Home Depot.
Some manufacturers have showrooms that you can visit if you know that you want a particular brand of cabinetry, such as Poggenpohl or Leicht, whereas others are available through particular designers. The Franklin Report is a good resource for evaluating contractors, and might give you insight into a particular contractor/brand.

Thanks for the input. To answer the question that was asked, we intend to replace the cabinets, the refrigerator and stove. The cabinets have probably been there since the building was erected in 1972 (they look that old too) and there is a lot of wasted space.

I've got 1975 cabinetry and I hate it. But it's efficient, 43 inches and uses every cubic inch possible.
But yech, it looks like dark walnut contact paper over pressboard.
I would not mind the expense but the MESS has me fearful.
Let me know what you do and how it went. Maybe it will be the stimulus I need.
But then, how do you stop. "Oh that makes the floor look ugly" and "How much for granite countertops" and "Might as well call a plumber and get a dishwasher installed."
And then it's STILL a small kitchen.
Maybe 5 years ago or so I redid the kitchen in my co-op and used Sears Remodeling. It was inexpensive but decent. Someone came over with a sample of cabinets and countertops and I picked out what I wanted. He also went over the redesign, which was pretty simple since there wasn't too much I could do with the layout. Took them about 3-4 days to complete the renovation (rip out old cabinets and install new ones). I also installed new appliances from Best Buy.
What was the total price, jad? Cabinetry, countertops and installation. The whole magilla.
I think it was around $10-$12K. I have the receipt somewhere and can confirm when I dig it up. I even signed up for a Sears card with no interest and paid it off during the promotion period. It was a good deal.
I went with Sears because it was cheaper than Home Depot. I also liked that they came to my place with real samples and I could see what it looked like in the space. The cabinets I picked were cheap-ish (looked good though) but they also had higher end ones. I also went with Corian counter tops. They don't do marble counter and I didn't want the Formica or what ever material the cheaper ones are.
They come in and will give you a free quote/estimate. I'd recommend at least doing that.
