Don't buy oil from any of the companies below. They were charged in a scheme whereby the oil delivery person would deliver less than said on the receipt, manipulating gauges so they said full, sucking out just delivered oil, with the flip of a switch, from the tank.

The victims of these alleged schemes include all those who managed, worked, or lived in the affected buildings, as well as the City itself — and when schools, hospitals, and police precincts were shorted, it was residents and taxpayers who paid the price and suffered the consequences,” said Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr., who announced charges against nine heating oil companies and 44 individuals.
The busts came after a two-year probe into the heating oil industry that was sparked by a whistleblower’s tip to the city Business Integrity Commission about shady practices.
Vance said the scammers had an array of ways to dupe customers into thinking they were getting all the oil they paid for, including using industrial-strength magnets to change oil gauges, a mechanism that would blow air into tanks instead of oil, and a switch that would siphon off some of the just-delivered fuel.
I think that the corruption is more widespread than that even. We've been heating with oil for years and have used many different companies (because it's impossible to find a good one). Sometimes we start to use a new company and our usage is noticeably jumps. I made a thread about that years ago. At least they've started to look into it. I'd switch to gas if the conversion wasn't so expensive - it would be great not to have to deal with an oil company.

The utilities offer a rebate or subsidize some of the cost for switching to gas. Have you looked into it?

I did several years ago--I think it was about $3,750 at the time (with the Con Ed program). Not terrible if you need a new boiler I guess, but ours was pretty efficient. We decided to wait until we needed a new boiler. Unfortunately the price to do the conversion is probably higher now.
Gives pause to the millions in the City getting fuel oil delivery.
Thanks for the tip sabbat hunter.
