Hi!

I got offered a job in NYC that I'm very interested in. The new company agreed to my salary requirements (with no negotiation involved).

My dilemma is - by leaving my currently employer right now, I will be giving up my bonus from 2015 (which I wont be getting for another month or so and it comes to about 7k to 10k).

At this point, would it make myself come across too petty to ask for a signing bonus for the new job even though they offered the base salary that I wanted (which is def a lot higher than my current pay)?

I dont want to extend my start date until after i get the 2015 bonus from my current employer either (which would be kinda low).

Thanks

Did you go through a headhunter? They are usually skilled at negotiating such things. If you applied directly you should have mentioned that a bonus was part of your compensation. You could tell them you want the job but are concerned about losing the bonus if you start now and see if they offer a signing bonus. There is some room for negotiation after the original offer. I once went through the interview process that took several weeks. By the time they made me an offer my current job had given me a raise and the job offer was for the same amount I was now making. I went back to the hiring company and told them about my new salary and they revised their offer by 10%.

Hmm.. ok. Thanks for your input... And no, there was no headhunter involved.

Shouldn't you still get the bonus anyway because it was for the 2015 year and you were there for the entire year?

I don't know the OP's situation but when I worked in banking and brokerage the bonuses were not contractual and you had to work there when they were awarded. Someone with an employment agreement like senior management might have a different situation.

Unfortunately my current employer requires me to be employed with them on the day that the bonus gets issued for me to be eligible to receive it.

Maybe this is just me, but it seems tacky as well as excessively greedy, after they agreed to your salary demands, to come back and ask for more.

Let me guess - you're male, right?

I'm not sure of the correct sequence here, but I think it goes something like:

Just be honest. That amount of money is not a trifle. This is a fairly common scenario. Your new employer will understand.
