San Francisco is more expensive than New York City as a whole but New York City is 350 square miles, 8,500,000 people, and is far more varied. San Francisco is only 24 square miles and only has 800,000 people so it's a ridiculous comparison.
If you compare it to similar areas i.e Manhattan vs San Francisco, Manhattan (and Manhattan is still two times larger than San Francisco)
Median Sales Price Manhattan $1,209,000
San Francisco $1,100,000
Average Price Per Sq Ft Manhattan $1438
San Francisco $939
And there is more to cost of living than housing price because (a) most people in either cities don't pay market rent, and the majority of people in both areas rent (b) taxation is different (c) property taxes are different (d) utilities and cost of services are different.
Los Angeles and San Diego aren't as expensive as NYC. Even Brooklyn is more expensive than LA. San Diego is closer to Bronx in terms of price than it is to Brooklyn & Manhattan.
Median Sales Price Brooklyn: $660,000
Los Angeles $640,000
Queens $530,750
San Diego $480,750
Bronx $369,000
NYC itself is very expensive and everybody knows that. The cities of NY, SF and LA are pretty much off limits to the average buyer. So what I listed are the median home prices in the overall metro area. The NYC metro as a whole is significantly more affordable than the Bay Area and LA area.
Yikes. Seattle then (at least King County and not counting Tacompton, etc), is more expensive for buying a house than any of these NY Counties (over 500k).
Not sure if that's something you want to brag about when it comes right down to it.
Los angeles is a very big spread out city and it has cheap/cheaper areas. I don't generally consider it as expensive as NYC. Also Bay area includes Oakland which is much cheaper than San Francisco (although that is starting to change).
