Western Queens (LIC and Astoria) is going to turn into the crown jewel of queens (same as Brooklyn). There is too much money going into those areas for it to fail. The rest of the borough will be based on whatever preferences people have.
I'm not from Queens but I'd suggest Astoria, Rego Park, forest Hills and Ridgewood. Queens has some mighty fine middle class neighborhoods. Even though I like Astoria, the area faced plenty of gentry among those who can not afford Brooklyn and Manhattan and rents have gone up.
Not sure if the title means that you are addressing your questions only to native New Yorkers? Or if you're stating that you are native New Yorkers looking for suggestions in Queens?
In any case, I'm not a native, but my personal favorite is Astoria due to the amenities, urban vibe, and ease of getting into Manhattan by train. I also love some of the streets in Forest Hills with the single family houses, but you need serious bucks to buy a single family house in Forest Hills. For that matter, Astoria is expensive as well.
Perhaps you should state your budget so people could advise you more effectively. Also if you want to be in a neighborhood with subway service, you should mention that too.
The high-rises in LIC give you the most "urban metropolis" atmosphere in Queens, and Forest Hills Gardens is where you would find the most "upscale suburban" atmosphere.
Depends on what one is looking for. If single and looking to get drunk every weekend then Astoria. If looking to start a family and work in Manhattan, but still enjoy the urban density and want decent restaurants around then a detached single family home in Forest Hills. If you can't afford a decent home well into the seven figures then the next best thing is Bayside/Douglaston within walking distance of the LIRR, however, many single family homes there are near and above seven figures as well.
