Ideas for where to go in Manhattan (or another borough) to get breath taking skyline views, esp. of midtown? I know people take the Staten Island Ferry and go to the Brooklyn Bridge Park and can see skyline views from there. Any place similar where you're seeing more of midtown rather than downtown? Bonus points if you can tell me exactly how to get there (i.e. what to tell a cab/uber) and if it's safe for a female at night (7-10 pm).
Alternatively, are there places where you can wander in SoHo, West Village etc. where the buildings are shorter where you are then treated to skyscraper views -- bc you're not completely blocked in by tall buildings and can see more of the skyline? I feel like I've definitely been places near NYU where you turn a corner and suddenly see a clear view of the Empire State Building -- just don't know where that would be really.
Rooselvelt Island tram to Roosevelt island is a different and nice view of the skyline. It takes metrocards and leaves from 59th street and Second avenue. Safe area and quaint.
Long island city offers great views of the city from across the east river. You see mostly the east side, but I think it's one of the best vantage points to get a view of several of the buildings at once. To get there, take the 7 train one stop from Grand Central to Vernon Jackson in Queens. From there, just walk towards the waterfront. There is a long deck, parks and a couple of piers. Very nice neighborhood.
The best views of Manhattan are from Boulevard East in Weehawken, New Jersey. Take one of any number of New Jersey Transit buses from the Port Authority Bus Terminal (8th Ave and 42nd Street) through the Lincoln Tunnel, less than a 10-minute ride.
Long Island City is good, too, though the views from Weehawken are better because the west side skyline is more dramatic, and Boulevard East is up on top of a tall cliff, so you have a better vantage point than the sea level views from LIC.
Journal Square PATH train to first exit in NJ (Newport). Walk 1 block to the Hudson River Walkway with your camera. Short walk North along the River to Hoboken, walk onto Frank Sinatra Park jutting into the Hudson, and take the PATH train back home from the Hoboken Station.
It's what I miss most about my last home.
