I will be working at Mt Sinai (to clarify: I'm talking about the Madison and 98th location), but some days I will be based at St Luke's on 114th and Amsterdam (maybe 1/3 of the time).

We are a small family with a young child and are currently looking at south-east Riverdale and Western Queens.

Which commute will be better? I can be quite flexible re hours, for example I can get at work around 10:00 am and leave after 7:00 pm. No car.

Queens - you will not have to transfer to a bus
Riverdale - you will have to transfer to a bus

From Riverdale Bronx, you'll be spending a lot of time commuting through high murder rate areas. This may matter if you regularly leave work at night. And any time your "small family with a young child" wants to spend time in midtown Manhattan, again you'll be traveling back & forth through a high murder rate area.

It'll be a LOT easier to get to 98th and Madison from Western Queens than Riverdale.

114th and Riverdale will be more convenient to Riverdale but not by as great a margin as the east side location is to Queens.

Actually, Riverdale would not be bad at all for either place, you can take the BxM1 express bus, which drops off at Lexington and 96th St., and picks up at 3rd Ave. and 96th, or BxM2 which drops off at 5th Ave. and 98th St and picks up on Madison and 99th St. for days you are on the East Side, and take the 1 train for days you are on the West Side.
