How's it going NYers? Me and my family of 10 adults and 3 children will be visiting NY July 7th-12th. Some of my family members insist on going the touristy route and hopping on one of the tour buses that let's you get off at several locations the bus takes us too. I've done some research and got the impression from locals that it would be just a waste of money and it would be better to do walking tours or just take the subway to wherever you plan on going to. I would like to know from you guys is it worth it, especially considering the fact we'll be coming from Elizabeth NJ taking the train anyway.
No, don't do it. Take a bike tour or a boat tour. That would be much more enjoyable. If you do the bus tour, do it on a Sunday so you won't just be sitting in traffic baking in the sun. Grey Line seems to be the most competent.

there's actually something very interesting about riding on a bus tour with seats on top breathing the nyc air and seeing everything and hearing all the sounds from that vantage point while getting to your destinations. sure, locals will say it's waste of time and money, but it's also extremely chaotic to have to organize 13 people via the depressing subway, in hot packed trains. the stress level will be high. i'm a local, and i'd take that bus tour, esp if it's got air conditioning. the city is excrutiatingly hot during the summer, esp in the subway stations.
Depends I guess if the children and elderly can tolerate a lot of walking or not. If they can't, this might be a good choice. Otherwise, it is indeed a waste of money. You can see and do more and save money just by walking and taking the subway.
The Double deckers are cool but will be super crowded this time of year. Take an organized tour that hits the main attractions and does a boat cruise. You can then go back to any areas that really interested you with the subway or taxi and spend more time on your own.
Grayline has one thats 8 hours start to finish, also On Board tours is a good company as well. A Google search will give you details on these.
14 people? What are the ages? nyc tour bus are pretty expensive...$50 a pop and a lot of waiting around....Probably cheaper to hire a personal tour guide with such a large group....

Hence I asked the age. If the group is older, a walking tour is out of the question....with 3 children, it appears walking if out.
Walking is the best way to see all of Manhattan in my experience.
