I'll be visiting my BFF at the end of August. I'm bring my daughter (10) with me. What can I squeeze into a weekend? My main plan is to go school shopping. I've also already purchased tickets to see a Broadway show. I need to know the hot places kids shop and places to eat. My friend lives in the Bronx and thinks he's going drag me around Harlem all day. I don't mind Harlem at all but I want to be a tourist.

I'm not sure if your daughter is still in children's clothes or juniors so can't tell you specific stores to shop at.
If your going to Times square there is lots of shopping on 5th ave from 57th Street to 42nd.
Also 34th Street from 8th ave to 5th ave is sort of a hub for shopping for ny-ers.
Id recommend Macy's on 34th street personally. I shop there.

I would avoid Grand Central. It is beautiful, but at the end of the day it is just a commuter train station and not really a tourist place.

If you're looking for somewhere to eat you need to be more specific. One place I typically recommend is the Polish restaurant Karczma over in Greepoint but that may be a bit far from where you are (although not far from Midtown).

Oh I don't mind seeing the city outside of Time Square. That's just where our hotel is.

I'd recomend one of the many European (Irish, Scottish, British, etc) tavern/pub places in the area (Connolly's, Perfect Pint, O'Brien's, St. Patrick's, O'Lunney's, even Jimmy's Corner on 44th and Heartland Brewery/Burgers) over the big suburban touristy chains (though if you must, Hard Rock is still a staple, and Buffalo Wild Wings is good for that type of chain with a sports bar template) or obviously meant to draw in the tourist crowd in the area.
