I really don't want to go to Sleepy's etc or one of the department stores. I'd like to find a mattress store that specializes in good quality mattresses (I don't need a brand name).
Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there such a place?
Thanks.

I have been meaning to go to Craig's Beds for the entire last year. Haven't made it yet. You need an appointment. Check the reviews on Yelp.

You can try out Leesa and Keetsa in SoHo.

Costco. No Kidding. That's where I always get mine and there is very little mark up on them unlike other mattress places.

book,
We bought the last one from Walmart online for partner. It was incredibly cheap and came with free shipping. It came tightly rolled and when unwrapped it expanded for a couple hours (presumably mostly foam.)
A nice mattress and under $200...we kept the old box spring. So far it has been a problem-free year with it.

I believe this is it:

It is what I would characterize as "soft" which was what we were looking for...not easy to find at SLEEPY's and MACY's wanted $1K+ for something soft enough (plus delivery.) And then buy at Walmart.

Book, use Sleepy's or Macy's for testing to see how firm you want it. (Yes, the salesmen are unbearably pushy...worst was some old goof at P.C Richards) and then buy online cheaply. (read customer reviews on softness.)

I've been sleeping on Dixie Foam Mattresses for decades. They used to have a showroom in Chelsea, but moved to Brooklyn not long ago. I just purchased a new mattress last year. Very fair prices, great product! And made in Brooklyn!

That's Sleepy's....name change. They're the mattress store equivalent of a shady car dealership.

I'm not in the market for a new mattress right now, but everyone I know who is seems to be shopping those new age foam mattress companies that will ship free and have crazy lifetime guarantees. They seem to be pretty happy so far, don't know about how they'll hold up over the years though.
