He's not really stepping down as much as he is retiring. There doesn't seem to be an adversarial relationship...honestly, I dont know why this is news.

It is news because Bratton made it so. He could simply have put in his papers quietly and or waited until next year to tell mayor de Boob he won't be around after 2017.....
If the City and or mayor really wanted him to remain there are options. Lord knows the previous DSNY commissioner got all sorts of approvals and waivers to keep from losing any of his pension benefits (and still building more) after Bloomberg kept him on past retirement age.
As much as I dislike de Blasio, there's nothing scandalous about a police chief stepping down at the end of de Blasio's first term. Now, if this was a midterm resignation, then perhaps we'd have a story.
Apparently the mayor didn't even know Bratton was putting in his papers until the interview came out. So that rules out being "forced" or whatever by the mayor.
Bratton joined the Boston police department in the 1970's it is now 2016, by the time he retires next year that is almost fifty years of public service/working, who wouldn't want to retire?
The guy has a wife and family, who wants to work on job that is basically 24/7 until the day they drop? Especially in a place like NYC where every arm chair quarterback has an opinion on how LE should be carried out.
well he's pretty old and it's a demanding job. Who's going to be the next guy?
But please god somebody competent run against De Bozio
