My birthday falls on a Saturday this year.I don't know, I find spending birthdays alone depressing especially if I'm out of town. I guess I could see a play or something but again it's the idea that I'm all alone again =*(
You could make a whole day of it. Go to some museums, check out the High Line, eat Shake Shack at Madison Square Park, etc.
The Chief of Police makes one believe it is a safe city, do not believe everything you hear. Most of those statistics are made up. Two days' ago, a beautiful, well-educated, young woman was raped and killed in Queens. Yes, with all her education, she made one mistake, and that was not using good judgement. Women should not go in isolates area to jog, unless they have company.

Not a day goes by that there is not someone shot or killed in the Bronx or Brooklyn. And yes, it is best to exercise caution.....especially, in a big city like this.....and especially, if one is out-of-town.....

I was almost 100% sure you were going to mention that woman getting killed, that's a tragedy but that type of thing is very, very, rare. And presumably OP won't be jogging in a secluded area.
Also you're going to need proof that the NYPD lies about murder statistics, you simply claiming it is not enough.
This is a strange question but I might be spending my 32nd birthday alone in NYC while I'm back for a few days. What would be the least depressing ways to spend it?
1) See a matinee showing of a movie you are interested in.
2) Go to a bakery or a diner buy yourself a piece of cake that you like.

Spend a nice day at a spa. Treat yourself to a facial, a massage, pedicure, manicure, or a nice haircut.
Spend time at a museum that you enjoy and treat yourself to a nice lunch.
Check out a movie or watch something on Netflix or plot yourself down with a good book, fix yourself a good dinner or treat yourself to a favorite take out and enjoy!
If the day's nice, attend a street fair, take a stroll in Central Park, go shopping.
