So the government cut tariffs, and the government deregulated finance (hey, regulations are bad according to conservatives). So the government actually delivered on what these people wanted, only they got burned by it severely. Be careful what you advocate for, you just might get it.

Some conservatives think that regulating industry is a primary role of government. You know, so there is a level playing field for the market to operate in. Difference is that we've headed towards having a government that is a business partner rather than a regulator. This created a huge conflict of interest. Do we remember who it was that deregulated the financial industry? I think his wife is now running for president.
