So, sometime ago I agreed to move to NYC with a friend I knew well, and her friend who was already in the city. Well, the girl who was already in the city, and was doing all the leg work looking for the new apartment backed out, and now my friend and I are in the lurch. Thankfully, we have until the first week of May to find something, but doing searching online just hasn't given us what we need.

I'm worried that we may not be able to find anything that fits our requirements. Neither of us has much money, and while I know I'll have at the minimum at part time job, but in the best case scenario, moving into a full-time retail management job. My friend, however, is an actress...

What we're looking for is a one - two bedroom apartment that allows cats, which is pretty straightforward, except that my friend says she doesn't want our rent to be above $1000/mo total. Or at least, her part to be above $500. Which would have worked when there were three of us, but just the two of us, it seems like it's impossible.

Any advice? We're looking all over Manhattan and Brooklyn, and were originally expecting to live in Wash Heights. She really wants to stay on Manhattan, but I've been looking in places like Bushwick and BedStuy, too. I just don't know if it's going to be possible to move, without known jobs, little credit. I've been looking at NYT online, Village Voice, Craigslist, and various Google-listed places. I'm taking a trip the last week of February to scope things out in person, job interviews, etc. I just don't know the best way to go about it!

Help!

Everyone asks me that. I've always wanted to, and I'm young, unattached to a house, kids, etc, so if I want to move to NY, this is the time to do it.

Unless you are willing to pay $1000 and she pays $500, I would rule out Manhattan. Thought I really am not sure about Harlem ect I don't know anywhere in Manhattan where you could get a 2 bedroom that for $1000 that is in any sort of neighborhood a female would want to live in. I don't even know anywhere in Manhattan where you could get a nice studio for that price!

See if you can find a third roommate. I have two other roommates, we each have our own bedroom, and we're not paying much more than $500 each. I live in Manhattan.
And be realistic. If you can't find a job and don't have any income, New York is going to lose it's appeal pretty fast.

Why don't you look for roommate/share situations that have two rooms open. Maybe you can find an exisiting 4 bedroom house or something that has one tiny bedroom for $500 and a larger one for you.

Even then you will have to look in outer-neigborhoods in outer-boroughs. A $500 room is do-able (just look on craigslist) but usually means a 6x10 foot room in an apartment that has several other bedrooms, and in a less desirable neighborhood.

Otherwise, your plans are looking totally unrealistic.
