I'm moving into an apartment building and I need just a simple internet plan. I live alone and I don't have a lot of devices/demands. As far as I know, my choices are Verizon Fios, Time Warner/Spectrum and RCN. I hear so many terrible things about each of them. What are your experiences with these internet providers? Have I left out any other options? Would appreciate your feedback - thanks!
For the most part most only get choices like Time Warner, Optimum and depending on where you live you may have Verizon Fios coverage as well.
Basic internet usually runs around $60-65(50mbs) for Optimum (this includes neighborhood wifi hotspots), you can optimize for faster speeds but usually those are for people that are downloading/uploading and streaming large files at a time, since the average person may not even tell the difference I'd stick to basic. Especially if you are by yourself.
People will swear by Verizon Fios as an alternative if their area is covered but probably will not be able to tell you the difference as to why it is actually better, supposedly it is fastest fiber-optic internet blah blah blah. I've have used it, you can't tell the difference if you are netflixing/fbooking or CD posting .
Yes you hear horror stories from all of them because people like to complaint but in the end its just internet service. You will get promotions to bundle for new customers, after a year of the promotion they will try to charge some exuberant prices, just threaten to leave and they will extend the promotion or just remove the add on services you don't need.

I have Verizon FIOS 25/25 Mbps and I am very satisfied with everything but the price (Triple play for $153.)
I am planning to switch to Time Warner when my contract with Verizon is up this Summer.
just go for the lowest price one. One thing to keep in mind, don't rely on customer service much. Just have internet to use at home, and pay the monthly bill. Some company offers first year with a discount, like 30 dollar for the first year, and after the promotion period is over, you pay something like 40 or 50, whatever their term was at the time of sign up.
I'm in the suburbs now, but when I lived in Brooklyn not too long ago, TWC was the only choice, and it sucked big hairy balls. Choose TWC if you enjoy being constantly teabagged. I have FIOS in the suburbs now, and its so much better.
Time warner is the best quality, Verizon Fios sucked for more. They tricked me into switching into a plan that was a bit less than what was I was paying with optimum but then when I got the plan it was as expensive with all the taxes and fees, and with way less channels. Never again. Installation also took like 4 hours. Optimum is pretty ok, just expensive. Never tried RCN, never lived anywhere it was eligible.
Whatever you do don't do direct tv. Similar to FIOS, they try to mislead or trick you. They claim you will be paying a low price but then you get it and you pay much more because you didn't read fine print or whatever. Also whenever it rains hard you lose service lol. Also they require a contract.
Whatever you do don't get a contract. That **** is a pain in the arse when you want need to move or decide you want to change your plan or whatever. They hit you with a fat cancellation charge
I decided to go with RCN - with taxes and everything, it will cost about $46/month and there's a one-time fee (about $60) for the router & setup service charge. If the services sucks, there's no contract so I'll just switch to another provider. The customer rep I spoke to did say that the price would increase in a year, so I will have re-evaluate then if I want to stick with RCN. Thanks to everyone who responded!
