My wife and I will be visiting NYC in a few weeks. Most of the places we plan to visit are in or near the Upper West Side (Museum of Natural History, NY Historical Society, Central Park) and Lower Manhattan/Financial District (Federal Hall, Museum of Finance, Trinity Church, Ellis Island, Fraunces Tavern).
Which area do you recommend we stay in and why? What are the pros/cons to each?
It probably would be cheaper to stay on the UWS. I have stayed at the Belnord Hotel for a low as $80 bucks a night when I used to work some overnight shifts. Granted the room was extra tiny, but if your just there to sleep and shower, you should be fine. This hotel is located near all the attractions you listed on the UWS. The subway is close that can take you downtown to everything else.
I'd stay on the UWS if only because it'd be a more interesting area at night after you've been out the whole day.
This. Upper West Side is a more "neighborhoody" kind of place than Financial District. More regular New Yorkers living there. And it's more charming. Also it's near Central Park, which is nice.
It is great to be near Central Park, especially in the nice weather we'll probably have in a few weeks. Also, if you're planning on taking in any Broadway shows (and I hope you do), staying on the Upper West Side would be super convenient.
UWS. Transportation can get you quickly to most places in Manhattan. Express trains stop at West 96 and West 72nd and times square.
