My wife and I plan to visit NYC in a few months and were wondering which areas we should steer clear of.

I'm a big history buff and am thinking of checking as many of these out as I can:

- Statue of Liberty
- Museum of American Finance
- New York Historical Society
- New York Library
- Central Park
- Empire State Building
- Chrysler Building
- Hamilton's The Grange
- Trinity Church
- Federal Hall
- St. Patrick's Cathedral
- Times Square
- Museum of the City of New York
- Grand Central Terminal
- Columbia University
- Teddy Roosevelt Birthplace Historic Site

Do any of these lie in shady areas?

Any other must-see attractions for history geeks that I left out?

What are the areas to avoid completely?

Thanks.

A lot of petty crime can occur in Central Park and Times Square. Are the areas that you listed in poor hoodish areas...no, they are not but crime can occur anywhere in NYC so don't be too carefree.

There is Alexander's Hamilton's house in Harlem.

There is the below museum. this is located in Washington Heights.

What have you heard about New York City that makes you so worried about safety?

Most of these are within the general tourist area. None of the places are unsafe, imo and you will be around other tourists. Just ignore the people trying to sell you tours especially in Central Park. The park has free guided tours just look at the website. Also, watch out for the pedicabs, they hustle people.
Don't be afraid of the subway. It's easy to use.
I guess as long as you aren't pulling out wads of cash or have a "I'm so scared look" you'll be fine. Most people will know you're tourists by looking at you.
I would add the metropolitan museum to the list. If you have a Bank of America credit or debit card, you can get in free on the first weekend of the month.
Don't stay at a Times Square hotel, it's too crowded and unless you're seeing a bunch of Broadway shows, it's not worth being in the middle of hell.
Depending on your budget, the Omni Berkshire is a great place and the Hampton Inn by the United Nations is a good budget deal and close to grand central

"Do any of these lie in shady areas?" Translation: "Are there any black and brown people around ??"

"What are the areas to avoid completely?"

The entire city which is so overrated.

Seriously, "vacationing" in NYC ?

A dirty, rat infested, overcrowded, rat race city plagued with homelessness. On top of that, it's a police state.

In Time Square and Columbus Circle for example, there are more police patrols than tourists, giving the city an "occupied" atmosphere.

I don't think you'll have much trouble staying in areas that tourists go to. However, I will say that recently when I was down by the Museum of the American Indian, right near the Staten Island ferry, I saw some shady looking characters who looked like they wanted to make a buck off an unsuspecting tourist. I can't prove that because I didn't allow them to speak to me, but I thought they looked like they were trying to seem "official" with some sort of bright colored vest to get tourists to trust them.

I'm not sure but the scam might be to try to get you buy tickets for the ferry...which is actually free.

We want to visit The Grange in St. Nicholas Park in Manhattan -- 414 West 141st Street, between Convent Avenue and St. Nicholas Avenue.

Is this area safe?

Good Grief Charlie Brown

If you have to ask if every area is safe then maybe you shouldn't come here.
What on earth did you do before the internet and forum days to ask advice of trips? Did you not travel then cause you didn't get reassurance it was ok.

You do realize NYC is one of the top places in the world for tourism?
