I may be tagging along with my husband next month to Tuscon. He has a couple days' work there, and I would play "tourist". Would I be relatively safe touring such places as the Sonora Desert Museum or the Botanical Gardens by myself in the daytime? Are there areas I should avoid? And, is public transit available to the tourist attractions, since I will not have a car?

No "safe" problems with the attractions you have chosen, however, don't expect anything close to decent public transit.

Another fun place to visit is Old Tucson and a drive up Mt Lemmon is always great, especially this time of year.

Good Luck

"Don't even dare" to do what, Sierra . . . visit those attractions or ride Public Transit?

I'm a little confused on this one.

Well, to qualify... I do have a little "street smarts," having grown up in Detroit. I have toured the Vegas Strip and St. Louis downtown alone, with no problems. But it's always nice to hear suggestions from the locals. If public transit is not "decent," what should I expect specifically?

Yeah if you're comfortable in Vegas and Detroit you'll be fine here. Here is a link to the public bus system, Sun Tran.

Not the best transit system around but may help you out.

What's there to be confused about, Bummer...?

Ridiculous questions call for ridiculous answers... that's all.

P.S. Go see the picture thread. Just posted some new artwork.

In general, anyone should always be careful (of course), but just know that Tucson's public transit system (aka Suntran) has been dubbed the "ghetto on wheels" by some.

That particular system will not get you directly to some of these places, like Old Tucson, Sonora Desert Museum, Colossal Cave, or Mt Lemmon, which are on the outskirts of town. You should be able to get a private shuttle company on your own, or perhaps a travel service or hotel could set up something for you.

Yes, you will be safe visiting those attractions in Tucson. Can't comment on the public transit since I never use it. You may be able to take the transit to the Botanical Gardens, but I am not aware of any public transit to the Desert Museum. May I suggest a rental car? It will give you the freedom to go anywhere anytime.

Enjoy!

Yep. A rental car is another excellent suggestion.
