Last week the city announced a deal with Co-op City to build a new waterfront park along the Hutchinson River running from the co-op city little league fields down to bay plaza mall. The city and co-op city don't know yet what the park will look like or what it will contain, and the city promises it will engage the community about what it wants to see in the park.

The deal is pretty unique and comes after months of negotiation between elected co-op city officials and the mayors office about increasing city services in the community. Co-op city is pressuring the city since they don't get reimbursement for the police and sanitation services they pay for themselves, and the city forces them to do go through an expensive asbestos abatement program despite there being no asbestos ever found.

The deal was that the co-op city would give the parks department the land for free for development.

I think this is great, I always wondered why that land was not developed. It's yet to be seen how long the city will take to do this or whether it will follow through or not. Let's hope this is not another broken promise. Some may remember how the city promised metro north access to co-op city with exeisting rails used by commercial and Amtrak lines. Now the city is saying that's at least 5-10 years off because they have to wait for penn station expansion .... so we will see.

Many in co-op city have been advocated for a parks department recreation center/community center to be built including a pool, fitness room, classes, activities etc but the city has balked at that idea

Some 50 years ago, there used to be a theme park that sat on the very land that Coop City exist on. It was known as Freedom from what I have been told where you can visit all 50 American states. The theme park lost money due to changing nature of American theme parks and the major city attraction known as the Worlds Fair in the 1960s. Coop City has lots of unused develop land along the marshes. To be honest I think the land should be left alone. The more green, the more better for the environment. But I the city does need a water park that is close proximity to city residents and the residents of Nassau, and Westchester. I do see this water parking being a void for the area in a positive sense.

I couldn't tell by this post... but just to be clear... it's not a water park lol it's waterfront park. Similar to east river park or Hudson River park. I don't think there would be the space for that. They say this park will only be 1.4 acres. It would be great if the community could push the city to build something like River Bank State Park there... something filled with community amenities.

Interestingly enough there is a small minority that are angry about the deal saying it will disrupt their peace and quiet and it will draw in outsiders and crime. Some are also upset that they are giving away land to the city. They are really trying to even start a petition. This is a very narrow NIMBY-ist perspective that could cost Co-op City a very nice new amenity. Right now the area is walled off with a fence and filled with weeds and wild shrubs blocking even a view of the beautiful Hutchinson river and pelham bay park marshland.

Some of the things we should ask for in the park:

Beach
Fishing/boating pier
Pool
Basketball courts
BBQ area
Picnic tables
Walkways

Terrible idea, I can only think of the problems such as fights, shootings, and arguments that would occur when you mix transplants and locals from nearby areas.

Are there any BBQ areas in Co-op City right now?

Oh yea and it will be a ghetto haven

Just deblasio throwing money into key neighborhoods again for re-election. Once he gets re-elected all of these little promises will magically go away.

No because Riverbay (the co-op's corporation) doesn't allow BBQs in riverbay owned property. This means that despite there being tons of beautiful park area within co-op city proper, no one BBQs because CCPD (Co-op City Police Department) will give you a ticket. This means you have to go the pelham bay park or orchard beach to Grill. If the city doesn't designate a BBQ area within this park it will be interesting to see how this develops. Typically people will BBQ in city parks regardless of whether it is a designated area or not, and the NYPD won't ticket people. I wonder if the CCPD will ticket people anyway?

I actually don't think so. Co-op City has big highways around it so people from surrounding areas don't just walk into the development. It's kinda private and remote, suburban feeling. More like a golf course in some areas than a super housing project. I really doubt anybody aside from co-op city residents will utilize this space.

Co-op has pretty large turnouts anyway.

Yeah that's what I'm afraid of I hope this is not the case and the city actually goes through with this.

Another thing is it seems they are not developing the whole waterfront and instead just develop a potion of it. The Section 2 waterfront on the other side of the baseball fields is not getting developed and I don't understand why. Would be a nice biking path.

Also Section 5 waterfront on the other side is getting no development either which is really messed up since Section 5 has always been the marginalized and less nice section of co-op city.
